Is Blow Drying Bad?

Q.
Is Blow-Drying Bad for Hair?

A.
Yes. Overdrying the hair causes strands to dry out and break. Your best bet is to blowdry your hair 80 percent dry, and let the rest dry naturally. When you can, you should skip the blowdryer altogether.

Teasing Hair Is Back

Fall 2005's runways were full of teased hair, a sure sign that teasing is back in style this upcoming season. But don't go all out -- trends on the runway require a softer touch on the streets (& a full head of teased hair doesn't look good on anyone). Here's how to get a great head of mildly teased hair.

Rule #1: Focus on the crown. Teasing at your crown -- rather than all over -- will give you just the right amount of volume.

Rule #2: Skip the comb. Stylists recommend using a flat-backed brush instead of a comb, the brushes are easier on your locks.

Rule #3: Get creative. Curl your hair in rollers, slick hair back in a low ponytail or pull a headband into place. Celebrity stylist Jimmy Paul suggests twisting teased hair into a French twist & fastening it in place with hairpins.

Lip Gloss Tips

Question:
I know lip gloss continues to be very popular, but I hate the mess. Are there any glosses out there that feel less 'goopy' than the typical ones?

Answer:
I know what you mean. I hate how my hair sticks to gloss, for example, but there are some different types of glosses to try.Sephora Crayon Gloss lip gloss pencil feels like a gloss but is more precise & less messy. You might also try Sonia Kashuk Lip Glossing with No-Feather pencil, which forms a translucent barrier around your lips so your gloss doesn't feather. The Kashuk gloss is particularly great for women with fine lines around their lips who usually shy away from gloss.Other great glosses: Chanel Glossimer in Satinette which won't go tacky on you & Victoria's Secret Pink Slip which stays put for hours, unlike most goopy glosses

Teeth Whitening

Is it ok to whiten your teeth?

Teeth whitening is one of those quick beauty fixes that can totally change your look while knocking out your pocketbook. Many dentists have jumped on the trend & offer teeth whitening in their offices, or you can splurge at a whitening spa such as BriteSmile. But while nothing will work as fast as a professional laser whitening procedure, the over-the-counter remedies will give you great results, according to New York dentist Dr. Jennifer Salzer in the September 2005 issue of Lucky Magazine. Here are some options to try:1. The strips. Crest Whitestrips Premium Plus have improved over the past year and now are much longer to cover your teeth. Their secret ingredient is 10 percent hydrogen peroxide, which is pretty powerful.

This bleaching tray system is a bit pricier than the strips & contain only 6 percent hydrogen peroxide, but they work great, as well, and are easier on sensitive teeth.3.
toothpaste. The toothpaste is actually better for maintaining your white smile after you've lightened. So use #1 or #2 and then invest in some toothpaste. Just remember to drink your tooth-staining coffee & dark sodas from a straw.

Tweezing

Tweezing is one of the least expensive techniques for removing unwanted hair. All it costs is the price of the tweezer.

Many people have been told that tweezing stimulates hair growth and this is a hotly debated topic in the hair removal industry. Studies by independent researchers show that hair growth speed may increase but this is due to the body's effort to repair itself and is only temporary.

When selecting a tweezer, check to make certain that the two tips of the tweezer meet and form a good grip on the hair. This will make the removal process easier. Do not use your good tweezers as screw drivers or bottle cap openers if you want them to remain in alignment for hair removal

How To Wax Your Legs

Waxing your legs isn't as hard or frightening as you may think. I'm going to walk you through it.

Time Required: 20 minutes

Here's How:
1. Choose your product. There are waxes or sugar solutions available.
2. Read instructions thoroughly... twice.
3. If product needs to be heated, do so for suggested time.
4. Test the temperature so that you don't burn yourself.
5. Check legs to be sure that they are dry. *This is very important.
6. For first time waxers, apply a thin layer of wax/sugar solution in a small area of the leg following hair growth direction.
7. Press muslin strip onto leg.
8. At the bottom of the strip (closest to your foot), turn a small area back against the strip. It should be resting flat against the strip about to be removed.
9. Lift the end as instructed and quickly pull back toward you. Do not pull up. Pulling back is the correct procedure.
10. Bite down on your lip GENTLY. The pain will ease up in a second or two. ;)
11. Repeat procedure if you have missed a few hairs.
12. Continue the leg until you are hair free!

Tips:

You must be careful not to burn yourself. I have heard lots of stories of this happening.
If the hair is not coming off, it may be that you are pulling up rather than pulling vertically. I made this mistake on my first few tries.

Pain? It was not half as bad as I expected. It stings for a second and then it stops. Actually it is a lot easier than I imagined. My only mistake was pulling the strips off incorrectly.

Laser Hair Removal Myths

Myths 1: Guarantees in laser hair removal. It is impossible to predict the exact result a patient will achieve with laser hair removal, especially with regard to how many sessions a given individual will require. Many of the hair removal clinics which guaranteed results have gone out of business. Like most reputable medical practices, the most established laser hair removal practices do not guarantee results.

Myths 2: Discount laser hair removal clinics.Established medical centers with excellent reputations do not discount their fees. Patients know their reputations and rely upon their experience and expertise. The same is true for laser hair removal. Consumers are advised, as with all forms of medical care, to seek the center of highest quality, rather than lowest cost. Laser hair removal requires exacting science, individual attention, experience, and a trained, caring, professional staff.

Laser hair removal

Basic facts

Some consumers have experienced permanent hair reduction, but there is limited data on how long hair reduction usually lasts, how much hair reduction is typical, and how often permanent hair reduction occurs.

Description

Light at a specified wavelength is delivered from a handpiece into the skin, where it targets dark material (usually the pigment in hair).

This is intended to cause thermal and/or mechanical damage to a hair follicle while sparing surrounding tissues.

Advantages

-Some consumers have experienced long-lasting hair removal or permanent hair reduction.
-Considered safe if performed properly.
-Useful for large areas such as backs or legs.
-Regrowth can come back lighter in color or finer in texture.
-Light-skinned consumers with dark hair have the best results.

Disadvantages

-Long-term data on safety and effectiveness have not been accurately established.
-Response rates have not been established.
-Regrowth rates have not been accurately established and cannot be predicted due to numerous variables.
-Generally not as effective on unpigmented (gray) hairs and red or blonde hair.
-Must be used very cautiously (if at all) on darker skin tones or on consumers who tan themselves.
-Improper treatment can cause burns, lesions, skin discoloration lasting several months, or patchy/patterned regrowth.
-Recent data suggest other skin structures are often affected by laser irradiation, and long term effects of this constitute an unknown risk.
-Requires eye protection.
-Can be expensive.
-Some find treatment painful.
-Regulation varies by state, so inadequate controls exist to ensure competent practitioners.
-Some consumers, even ideal candidates, do not respond to treatment.
