High Cheekbones

How to fake high check bones like Demi Moore?
Brush a powder blush on the apples of your cheeks to your hairline then dab a bit of highlighter or luminizer on the high points of cheeks. Voila! There you are looking like Miss Demi Moore in just seconds.

3 Types of Soap...

Ok, ok, we'll get down to the real nitty gritty. The truth is the best body cleansers are pure & simple. Plain works just as well as fancy. Here's the rundown:

Deodorant soap These soaps actually contain bacteria-killing chemicals that can dry out your skin. Regular soap will get rid of odors just as well. We like French-milled soap. But yes, Ivory or Dove works fine.

Anti-bacterial soap The only people who really need this special soap are doctors, elementary school teachers and those with bad back acne. Normal soap (again, Ivory, Dove or any other typical bath bar found just about anywhere) will keep you just as clean and bacteria-free.

Shower & bath gels Most bath & shower gels contain sodium laurel sulfate, a chemical that can be drying to your skin. Who knew? Yep. Might as well keep them for your guests only or for special occasions. They are fun to use after all.

The Importance ofColor Analysis

You probably own a few outfits that always garner comment whenever you wear them. It could be something as simple as "You look great today!" or as obvious as "Wow! That color really brings out your eyes!" It doesn't matter how old the garment is or how many times you wear it, you feel good in it because it always gets you noticed. It brings you confidence.
On the other hand, you've also probably worn clothes when people have said, "Are you feeling okay today?" Or perhaps they said nothing-even if it was a new outfit and you waited for kudos that never came.

So what's the difference? Color.

Or more specifically, the way that certain colors interact with your skin tone to make you appear vibrant and healthy--or pale and washed out.

Now you may have heard about color analysis before and wondered what it was all about.

Maybe you've even had your "colors done" at one point, and either loved or hated the results. Perhaps you've heard stylists on television say things like "Color doesn't matter; anyone can wear anything." And after all was said and done, you're either skeptical or completely confused.
Allow me to "cut to the chase."

All colors are made up of the three primary colors-red, blue, and yellow. Yellow is warm, blue is cool, and red is neither cool nor warm, but "in-between." When you add yellow, you get a warmer tone; when you add blue, you get a cooler tone.

Human beings can likewise be classified as having either "warm" or "cool" undertones depending on their unique combination of melanin, carotene, and hemoglobin. The undertone you're born with never changes; it simply deepens with a tan and fades with age.

So based on your yellow or blue undertone, you'll look best in colors that are either yellow or blue based.

Why?

Your skin, hair, and eyes react to the colors around them, absorbing colors that match your undertone and reflecting colors that oppose it. It's why some brides look great in white but others look better in ivory. And it's why you look great in some colors and completely washed out in others.

Wearing the "right colors:"

  • Makes your eyes sparkle
  • Gives your skin a healthy, flawless appearance
  • Makes you look younger
  • Increases your self-confidence

Wearing the "wrong colors:"

  • Dulls the skin, hair, and eyes
  • Magnifies skin imperfections
  • Makes you look older than you are
  • Makes you appear heavier than you are

So why don't we instinctively know which colors look best on us?

Actually, we do. We're naturally drawn to the colors that suit us best. Unfortunately, we may have been unduly influenced over the years by parents, siblings, or peers who have different coloring than us. Combine that with the Fashion Industry showing its latest "must haves" twice a year with little regard to this concept, and you could have a closet full of clothes with colors you can't wear.

HOW TO BUY MAKEUP AS A GIFT

Here's some hints on how to stock up on products for your friends... painlessly.

*All the major cosmetic companies offer "Gift with Purchase which are really reasonably priced. They include everything from fragrances to "neutral" makeup. Makes a great gift if you can bring yourself to give it away.

*If you want to deviate from simply a collection of cosmetics, choose cotton balls, makeup remover and products for the nails. Once you start looking at all that is available, you will see how easy it is.

*If you know that your friend likes Bobbi Brown products, stop by their counter and ask about the lastest products.

*Cosmetic counters are now offering classes. Treat your friend to lunch and a makeover for the pair of you.

Last Minute Beauty Gifts

Best Gift to Splurge on: Send them to the spa We love getting gifts we feel guilty about buying ourselves. For moms, sisters & girlfriends (attention men!), a spa gift is one that will blow them away. But skip the pedicure & manicure & opt for something more fan-tabulous. Go for a shiatsu massage, a wild wrap with fun stuff like seaweed or a deep facial. Better yet, set up the appointment for both of you.

Avoid: Pre-packaged gifts bought at department store beauty counters. Boring, boring. That screams, "I only had 10 minutes so I opted for what was easiest

Best Gift for Your Best Friend Who Lives Far Away: A stocking filled with wrapped gifts Who doesn't love opening little presents? If you have to mail a gift, we suggest wrapping a bunch of products and then packaging them in a stocking.

Some stocking stuffer suggestions:
1. Only beauty editors & rich girls buy themselves Shu Uemura's $20 eyelash curler. Such decadent gifts are fun to get.
2. A purse-sized perfume she's admired.
3. Makeup bags can be picked up in a local boutique (you can't have enough of these).
4. MAC lipsticks are some of the best. Pick a shade you know would flatter her.
5. A set of nice makeup brushes (Sephora has several options).

Avoid: Gift certificates to generic beauty spots like Sephora. Your best friend deserves more of your attention. But feel free to include a gift card in her special stocking!

Best gift to Keep on Hand: Soap bars Another product people love but rarely splurge on are gorgeous bars of French milled soaps. We love to drop by Fresh in the West Village (you can find these stores all over the country) and stock up on bath bars. They're $12 but come in the prettiest packaging. Combined with a beautiful soap dish, it's a great gift to keep on hand in case someone catches you unprepared.

Cure for bad breath?

The key here is to get rid of the culprits. You’ll need to keep bacteria at bay by daily flossing and brushing. You also want to drink plenty of water. It’s especially important to brush and floss at night, when production of saliva slows down causing ‘dry mouth.’ Buy a tongue-scraper and use it in combination with brushing your tongue. Sugarless gum also does an excellent job of cleaning out the crevices where bacteria like to breed.

Winter Do and Don'ts

Trends come & trends go & this season you don't want to be caught in public looking like last year (or worse, last ... decade). I've read all the magazines for you & come up with the best & worst trends for winter.

Winter Do #1: Goodbye Helmet Head The less done your hair looks, the more 'in' you'll look. You'll notice trendy hair this season looks loose, wavy & fresh. To mimic it, throw out the hairspray, use a light mousse instead of gel to add texture & don't be afraid to let your roots grow out, just a bit.

Winter Don't #1: Grow nails long & finish them with a French manicure Short, round nails are hot for this season. Skip the long-taloned manicure & instead, paint your nails dark.

Winter Do #2: Don't throw out the self-tanner yes, we love Nicole Kidman's porcelein skin too, but there's nothing sexier than a bronzed glow in the dead of winter. You'll always look as if you just got back from the tropics.

Winter Don't #2: Layer on the foundation A fresh face -- admittedly hard to get in winter if you live in the cold climes -- is key this winter. But to look fresh, you must take it easy with the foundation. No one needs to slather on foundation all over her face. Stick to your bad zones, typically around your eyes, your nose & on your cheeks. You don't need foundation on your forehead or even neck. Another tip: Skip foundation altogether & use concealer around your eyes & nose.

Best Holiday Bet: Shimmer & Sheen

The hottest accessory at holiday parties this year is a shimmery you. You can add a subtle sheen to your cheeks, nose, forehead & even shoulders & collarbone. But you must be careful to do it right otherwise you'll end up in the holiday 'don't' picture. Here's how to add glow this season:

Rule #1: Keep the shimmer to nighttime. Don't go to the office all aglow.
Rule #2: Watch what you're wearing. If your outfit sparkles or you have sparkly jewelry, keep your shimmer to one spot on your face (like cheeks or just your lips). If you're dressed in a sleek black outfit, you can get away with shimmer on more parts of your face & body. The key is not to compete.
Rule #3: Pick the right product. We like Bobbi Brown's shimmer, Urban Decay Sparkly Sweet & Victoria's Secret Give Me Glow Luminous Baby Powder.

Keep Your Skin Moisturized

Winter's pretty much here (at least it feels like it), so 'tis the season for dry skin. To keep this in check, try loofah gloves (available in most drugstores) in the shower. They help slough off dead skin, which keeps moisturizer from properly taking. Follow your shower with a heavy body moisturizer with shea butter.
