Does drinking 8 glasses of water a day make my skin moist?

A. No. Despite years of having this drummed into our heads, this is not true. It is good to keep your body, including your skin, hydrated, however the outermost layer of skin does not absorb water since it is made up of dead skin cells. Moisture level of skin is not determined by internal factors, but rather external ones, such as cold or hot air, dry heat and by the number of oil-producing glands you have. So if you want to hydrate your skin, exfoliate it weekly with a sea-salt scrub or other exfoliator to remove dead skin then apply a rich moisturizer while skin is still damp. Want to hydrate your insides then by all means, drink your 8 glasses of water a day.

What is the shelf life of mascara?

Mascara This product expires the fastest: Throw out after 4 months. Extra tip: If you don't want your mascara to expire faster than its fresh date, don't pump the wand in & out, you're only exposing the product to drying air.

What is the shelf life of lipstick?

Some experts say 1-2 years. Others say up to 4 years. What everyone agrees on is that if it smells rancid, throw it out, it's spoiled.

Extra tip: If you store lipstick in the refrigerator, it will last longer.

Bonus tip: Want your lipstick to last longer during the day? Shade in lips with lip liner before applying lipstick.

How to store makeup

Skip the fancy makeup bags & store makeup in freezer-size Ziploc bags, this way you can see exactly what you need & you can throw the bag out when they get dirty. The bags also protect your main bag during trips or flights, when screwtops inevitably come undone or plastic covers fall off your eyeshadow, getting makeup everywhere...inside the Ziploc.

How much hair loss is ok?

Everyone loses between 40 & 120 strands a day, depending on how much hair you have, your age & your hair's growth cycle. People with fine hair tend to have more of it & therefore will lose more of it than their thicker-haired sisters & brothers. Your hair also thins as you get older, particularly after menopause for women, but the thinning will stop & not continue as it will for men.

Here are common causes of hair loss:
1. Seasonality. You'll lose the most hair in the fall -- typically November and December when hair reaches maturity in its growth cycle.

2. Diet. Hair loss can occur through poor dieting, tight ponytails, even with age. According to dermatologist George Cotsarelis, M.D., director of the University of Pennsylvania Hair and Scalp Clinic, iron deficiency may be the cause.

He states in the April 2006 issue of 'Ladies Home Journal,' it might be worth checking your levels with your doctor & take a supplement if they're low.

3. Pregnancy Some women experience hair loss with pregnancy or as part of post-pregnancy hormonal changes. Other women experience hair loss when going on or off (usually off) the birth control pill.

4. Illness Sometimes it happens as a result of illness. Even stress, excessive weight loss, iron deficiency & thyroid problems can cause hair loss.

If you're really worried, ask your doctor, however, experts say you really only need to worry if your part is getting wider or you can see your scalp through your hair. But don't worry, not all hair loss is permanent.

There is a specialty doctor called a 'trichologist,' an expert in hair problems. You can make an appointment and ask the doc for a diagnosis.Extra tip: If you're a woman you won't experience male-pattern baldness. Women's hair tends to thin all over.

The only FDA-approved hair loss treatment for women is Minoxidil, according to scalp specialist David Kingsley, PhD, in the November, 2005 issue of 'O' magazine. Minoxidil works in 60-70 percent of cases by improving the follicle's ability to produce hair, Kingsley said.

Black nailpolish?

Black nailpolish?

Apparently short nails, with dark polish (black like Lindsay Lohan has on) is the new trend this winter. Personally, I'm not a fan of it...what do you think?

8 Mascara Tips

Tip #1: How to use a lash comb. For some, lash combs are simply too fussy. But for some makeup artists, they're a great invention & keep lashes glob-free & perfectly separated. So how to use? Apply mascara at the lash base, wiggling the brush & then comb the mascara to the tips of your lashes. Not into the lash comb? Get rid of clumbs without them by removing excess mascara from the wand. Wipe wand on tissue, this eliminates blobs BEFORE you start.

Tip #2: Try a clean mascara wand. Sweep a clean, fresh mascara wand through lashes when they're wet. Don't worry, you don't have to buy them. When you finish a mascara, clean the wand in a capful of eye makeup remover, then wash with soap & dry. Keep it clean by washing it whenever you wash your makeup tools.

Tip #3: Don't shy away from colored mascara. Basic mascara rules are simple: Black works for everyone but blondes. Blondes should opt for brown/black by day & reserve black for night. Blue mascara, however, can brighten blue eyes, purple mascara can make brown eyes pop. The most popular mascara sold in the US is Maybelline Great Lash mascara, a great buy at under $6. The company estimates 1 tube is sold every 1.6 seconds in the U.S.

Tip #4: When applying mascara, wiggle the wand at the base of the lashes. It's the mascara placed near the roots (not the tips) that gives the illusion of length.

Tip #5: Thin, short brushes are best. A thinner brush allows you to get into the corner of eyes. Short brushes give you more control.

Tip #6: Give a few coats to the edges by blinking. Blink onto the brush to give ends an extra coat.

Tip #7: Powder under the eye before applying mascara. Sometimes mascara smudges because it's attracted to oily concealer or eye creams.

Tip #8: Use an eyelash curler BEFORE applying mascara. Curling lashes gives eyes the appearance of being wider & brighter. Shoot hot air from your blowdryer on the mascara curler for 3-5 seconds to warm it up before curling lashes. Touch it first to make sure it's not TOO hot. Shu Uemura makes the most popular eyelash curler on the market ($18-$22).
