A new use for baby powder?

I've heard that baby powder is great for getting the sand off of you at the beach.

Baby powder is a must for every beach bag. Put it on and the sand slides right off. It works on all the spots where sand sticks -- in baby creases, backs of the knees, even down bathing top (and bottoms).

Finding Your Best Shade of Lip Color

"If I had to teach someone just one thing about lip color it would be this: Find a lipstick that looks good on your face when you are wearing absolutely no makeup." -- Bobbi Brown, "Beauty"

For years I would stand before the makeup counters at department stores and stare befuddled at the lipsticks. To me they looked like the entire U.S. Marine Corps standing at attention -- they were all so darn cute, how was I to pick the perfect one?

Turns out picking the right shade of lip color isn't so complicated, after all. Of course it would take me 15 years of buying the wrong shades of lip color to find this out.

The Simple, Most Perfect Trick to Finding Your Best Shade of Lip Color

The most flattering lip tones will be one or two shades darker than your natural lip color, according to makeup artist Bobbi Brown.

To test shades, apply lipstick or gloss to one lip. If that color is just a shade or two deeper than your bare lip, then you've found your shade.

Yes, it's a simple as that. So what to do if you like to buy your lipsticks at a grocery store or department store like Wal-Mart, where you can't try the lipsticks out before you buy? You can trust the color printed on the box. Simply hold it up to your lips in the store and check it out in the mirror. Or better yet, check the color out in a window, where natural light shines through

hold it up to your lips in the store and check it out in the mirror. Or better yet, check the color out in a window, where natural light shines through.

How to Pick the Right Shade of Red

Many women wrongly believe they can't wear red lipstick. The secret to choosing the right red lip color is in the undertones. Pink-skinned girls should opt for cherry red. Those with olive skin can wear fire-engine red. Dark skin looks great with deep reds. One big red lipstick no-no: It's best not to match lips to your outfit.

Don't want to go all out with red lipstick? Create a red lip stain with a little trick I got from InStyle Magazine's August 2007 issue. Makeup artist Angela Levin smooths on Dr. Hauschka lip balm then applies red lipstick over it with her finger. The result is a gorgeous sheen of red.

Uh-Oh, You Hate the Lipstick You Just Bought

Don't throw out those lipsticks that are just a wee bit off. You can create a great lipcolor by blending lipsticks you don't like. For lipstick that's just a bit too bright, tone down the color with a darker liner before applying a lipstick.

When to Use a Lip Brush

Use a lip brush when applying strong colors. You need a mirror and expert application so you don't paint the outside edges of your mouth.

How to Use Lip Liner

While you can line lips before or after lipstick or gloss application, I find lips look more natural when I line lips after I apply lipstick.

To keep lipstick from wearing off so fast, fill in lips with liner before applying lipstick. This acts as a color base, so when the lipstick wears off you still have color.

The More Complicated Way to Choose Lip Color

While picking the right shade is as easy as going a couple shades darker than your natural lip color, we can delve just a wee bit deeper in the science of shades and skin tone.
Women with fair skin, look great in lipstick shades such as nudes in a slightly apricot shade, pinks and light corals. Stay away from browns, which will appear blah.

Those with a medium skin tone can go a bit darker. You'll look great in roses, mauves and berries. Skip the bright reds and consider a deep burgundy instead.

Deep plum, chocolate or red is fabulous with dark or black skin. According to the editors of Allure's "Confessions of a Beauty Editor," women with dark skin "can go in one of two directions: toward brown or purple. Think caramel or walnut for day, and plum or wine for evening."

How to wear a ponytail

The Sleek Ponytail - Wear this look to the office or out to a nice dinner. Especially gorgeous when paired with thick, dark sunglasses. (Everyone will think you're famous). My favorite look is the sleek ponytail with thick, heavy bangs.

How to get it: It's best to dry hair straight with a brush since wet ponies are the antithesis of sexy. Part hair slightly off-center (parting in the middle is also trendy) and fasten the tail lightly so that it sits slightly below the middle of the back of your head. To combat flyaways, spritz hairspray on your hairline.

For added polish, run a shine serum (we like Bumble and Bumble's Gloss) through pony and straighten hair completely with a flat-iron. Extra tip: Stylists love the look of hair wrapped around the elastic. To get this look, skip the nasty fake hair ones you can buy in drugstores and department stores (tacky!) and instead, pull a pencil-thick piece of hair from the bottom of the pony, wrapping it around elastic. Leave 2 inches to pull down through the elastic. Secure with a couple bobby pins.

The Cute Ponytail - This look is great for the weekend and works with all lengths of hair. We call this look "cute" because it relies on little kid barrettes (or opt for funky ones in cool geometric designs) or decorative bobby pins to hold back bangs or layers that don't fit in the ponytail. This look is particularly cute on chin-length hair. The pig's tail curl is super cute. How to get it: Best not to get too sleek on this one. Spray volumnizer at the roots, then let hair airdry, scrunching it for a bit of wave. Don't have time? Blowdry hair without brushing, use fingers instead to separate hair. Rake hair back with your fingers (skip the brush) and secure either at the nape of your neck or just a bit higher. Scrunch pony more for more wave. Pin bangs or unsecured layers with a decorative bobby pin or little kid barrette. We love these France Luxe Long and Skinny Barrettes

The Rumpled Ponytail - The perfect weekend or after work hairstyle. This look works best with unwashed hair, which we find most manageable.

How to get it: Either start with unwashed hair or get the messy look by spraying roots with volumnizer and airdrying hair or blowdrying using your fingers instead of a brush. Scrunch as you dry. Tease hair at the crown. then rake hair back at the nape of your neck. To get fullness, secure four or five bobby pins just above the elastic. This way you get a fuller look. Scrunch the tail once it's in place.

The Cheerleader Ponytail - A super-high ponytail will take years off your face, but if you have excessive widows' peaks at your crown or if you have a big forehead this look can be unattractive. To see if you're a bad candidate, pull hair back and look in the mirror, if hairline starts high at the top of your head, this look can bring too much attention to your forehead.

The Dramatic Ponytail A high, tight ponytail is swingy and totally sexy. It's also wearable at work or at night. The key to this look is the barrette, so go more dramatic in the evening. Be careful if you have a high forehead, when you wear high ponytails, you don't want to look bald from the front. A better ponytail for you is one with a sidepart and fastened lower on your head.

How to get it: Spritz hair with a volumizing spray like Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray, then dry hair straight. If you have curly hair, use a diffuser and an anti-frizz product instead of the volumizer. Take a section at the top part of the back of your head and tease hair at the root. This will give you needed volume for the dramatic look. Once hair is sufficiently teased, carefully brush hair back into a pony up high on the back of your head just above your ears. Gently pull hair at the top of the pony out and up for drama.

Run a gloss (we like Bumble and Bumble Gloss, see sleek ponytail above) through ponytail, using extra at the ends. If you're going out at night, up the drama ante by securing a gorgeous barrette (we love the ones that look like brooches) near the elastic and on the side of your head. If you use a barrette, keep in mind that it's a piece of jewelry so be careful not to overdo the look with earrings, necklace and a bracelet. The less jewelry you wear, the more oomph your pieces have. Check out these gorgeous barrettes and books on how to make your own

Why Exfoliate?

Exfoliate - Chances are if you don't exfoliate daily or weekly, your skin is covered in dead skin cells that are mucking up the surface of your skin and causing your skin to not only look dull, but older as well.

Without proper exfoliation, foundation won't smooth over your skin cleanly and moisturizer won't properly soak in.

Exfoliate with face scrubs, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, beta alpha hydroxy pads or any Vitamin A product like Retin-A.

Foundation is Out, Tinted Moisturizer is

Foundation is Out, Tinted Moisturizer is In

If you refuse to go bare in summer and can't imagine life without your foundation, consider putting away your foundation for the season and trying a tinted moisturizer. I'm warning you, you may never go back to your old foundation.

Lighter than foundation, tinted moisturizers still cover flaws but feel less "cakey." And while foundations can feel as if they're melting off your face, tinted moisturizers won't.

Most women are darker in summer, so if you insist on using your foundation, consider one shade for summer and a lighter one for winter. My favorite tinted moisturizer is Laura Mercier, which contains SPF, a bonus all year round

How to Keep Your Feet in Tip-Top Shape in Summer

How to Keep Your Feet in Tip-Top Shape in Summer

If you are running around in flip-flops all summer, chances are the skin on your feet has toughened alligator-like. Here are some secrets to keeping your feet in great shape:

1. Pumice stone. Forget all those wimpy foot scrubs, you need a real pumice stone to rub down the callouses and other hard spots on your feet. Wait until the end of your shower, when your feet have had a chance to soften in the water, then apply a moisturizing soap and have at it with the pumice stone.

2. Moisturize. Follow a good "pumicing" with heavy duty moisturizer. Rub moisturizer into soles of feet, then sleep in socks. By morning your feet should be soft.

3. Keep toes polished. Don't run around public with unpainted or chipped toenail polish. There's nothing that screams "unkept woman" more than a foregone pedicure. Consider a clear or light polish, which tend to last much longer than colors and are less obvious when chipped. If your nails are a mess, wear closed-toed shoes.

4. Keep clippers on hand. Big faux pas: Long toenails. If you can scratch a mosquito bite on the back of your leg with your big toe, you know it's time for a little clip-clip.

Are You Overcleansing Your Skin?

Are You Overcleansing Your Skin?

Oily skin can feel extra oily in the summertime. But you may be overcleansing your skin by washing it at night and in the morning. Wash face only at night to remove makeup and impurities, then splash your skin in the morning with lukewarm water. This will remove any excess oils without drying out your skin. Extra tip: One sign of overcleansing is tight, taut skin. If your skin feels squeaky clean to you, it's really a sign of dehydrated skin. Skin should feel moist and dewy. When skin feels taut, apply a moisturizer.

How to Control your Curls in the Summer

Simple ways to take care of your curly hair in the summer...

1. Pull hair back in a hairband. If you pull the hair back in a band while it's damp, it's a great way to "flatten" hair at the crown, leaving the curls at your hair's ends. Later you can pull off the hairband and you'll have gorgeous body.

2. Water is your enemy. Try not to dry hair in summertime with a dryer, instead let hair airdry. Apply a leave-in conditioner to ends, a silicone serum to curls and let hair airdry. You can pull hair back in a loose bun for a gorgeous look. Add some style with a ballerina band.

3. Pull the sides of hair back, leaving a sort of half-up/half-down 'do. It's super romantic.

One last word of advice: don't fight your curls in summer, you'll lose the battle once you step out in humidity. Instead, embrace your look and keep in mind that we straight-haired girls spend a lot of time trying to get your curls
