Water damage to your hands

An old roomate of mine always wore rubber gloves when washing dishes, and she said she did that to protect her hands and nails, something her mother did when she was growing up.

So i was curious to see what her mothers hands looked like, believe it or not, they looked great - she said she wears gloves all the time when washing dishes and doing yard work.

So, get into the habit of wearing rubber gloves when you do any cleaning around the house.
The reason? Cleaning agents can be extremely harsh on both nails and hands. The nails when exposed to water, swell and then shrink back as they dry. This contributes to brittle nails.

Quick Tip for Soft Hands

If your hands dont feel soft anymore, try an age old Vaseline trick...

Before you go to bed, lavish on the Vaseline and then pop on a pair of cotton gloves. Your hands will be incredibly soft by morning

You can also try this with your feet !

How to Massage Your Hand

To stimulate circulation, rub your palm over the back of the hand and then repeat with the other hand.

This movement is very similar to washing your hands and it does not only stimulate circulation, it also warms the hands.

Give it a try!

Take Care of Your Hands

Hands are the most visible parts of you, but they also take a lot of abuse. You must give them the same attention you give your face.

* Soften your hands even while you do the dishes. Add a little almond oil (about a teaspoon) to dishwater. The water will soften rought skin while the oil seals the moisture.

* Slough off dead skin cells with a solution made of sea salt lemon. Brush it into hands with an old toothbrush. Do this twice a week to soften hands and remove discoloration.

* Wash hands thoroughly with warm water, then, using a coarse washcloth, rub briskly. While skin is slightly damp, apply a mixture of one teaspoon honey and one teaspoon olive oil. Place hands in small plastic bags, then in a pair of cotton gloves for thirty minutes. The heat helps the treatment penetrate.

* Warm a cup of milk in the microwave for thirty seconds (or until warm, but comfortable to the touch). Soak your hands for five minutes to strengthen nails and hydrate skin. Not only is milk loaded with lactic acid, a natural alpha hydroxy acid that gently exfoliates dead skin, but its high calcium content will strengthen fragile nails.

Is it safe to whiten your teeth at home?

Teeth whitening is one of those quick beauty fixes that can totally change your look while knocking out your pocketbook. Many dentists have jumped on the trend & offer teeth whitening in their offices, or you can splurge at a whitening spa such as BriteSmile (which will offer you a 2 for 1 deal if you bring a friend).

But while nothing will work as fast as a professional laser whitening procedure, the over-the-counter remedies will give you great results, according to New York dentist Dr. Jennifer Salzer in the September 2005 issue of Lucky Magazine. Here are some options to try:

1. The strips. Crest Whitestrips Premium Plus actually work & are quite affordable.

2. GoSmile System. This bleaching tray system is a bit pricier than the strips but they work great and are easier on sensitive teeth.3. Whitening toothpaste. The toothpaste is actually better for maintaining your white smile after you've lightened.

So use #1 or #2 and then invest in some toothpaste. Just remember to drink your tooth-staining coffee & dark sodas from a straw.

Is there a cure for bad breath?

The key here is to get rid of the culprits. You’ll need to keep bacteria at bay by daily flossing and brushing. You also want to drink plenty of water. It’s especially important to brush and floss at night, when production of saliva slows down causing ‘dry mouth.’ Buy a tongue-scraper and use it in combination with brushing your tongue. Sugarless gum also does an excellent job of cleaning out the crevices where bacteria like to breed.

How can you tell if you have bad breath?

Skip the old method of blowing into your hands and smelling your breath. Instead, lick the back of your hand, let the saliva dry, then take a whiff. What you smell is your true breath.

3 different types of mascara

When you stand at the makeup counter or aisle, it can be confusing. Should you get lengthening, curling, thickening or non-smudging? And what, just what, is the difference between each of these anyway? (Is there a difference, or are these mascara types all hype, designed to get you to buy more than one type?)

Mascaras these days are loaded with proteins & waxes all designed to condition your lashes & come in problem-solving formulations. InStyle's beauty book, Getting Gorgeous, breaks down these different types of mascaras.

Lengthening mascara
Lengthening mascaras have dense bristles that allow you to get more mascara on your lashes & especially on the tips of your lashes.

Thickening mascara
When you want bulk, you do want to buy the mascaras touted as 'thickening.' These products contain a thicker formula of waxes & silicone polymers that coat lashes & make them appear bulkier. The best thickening mascara on the market (according to InStyle magazine's 2006 'Best Beauty Buys' guide) is Christian Dior Diorshow (about $22):

Waterproof mascara
Obviously these 'non-smudging' mascaras contain special synthetic formulas meant to repel moisture. But these can be harsh on your lashes (to prevent breaking lashes, you can put Vaseline on them before you go to sleep). A great waterproof mascara is Maybelline Lash Discovery: Non-clumping mascara These contain ingredients like silk extract & glycerin. The applicators also have longer wands which allow for a more even application.

Applying Eyeliner in the Inner Rims of Your Eyes

Applying Eyeliner in the Inner Rims of Your Eyes

  • Make sure your hands and nails are clean of any dirt and oil before your go near your eyes.
  • Check that nails are smooth, without any ragged edges because a shard or rough edge from your nail could scratch the eye.
  • Use only a clean pencil, which means sharpening it prior to each use (with a clean sharpener) and not sharing with anyone.
  • Be aware that you may be allergic to the ingredients in a pencil, in which case, itching and redness may occur. So it may be a good idea to test the pencil outside the eye area for a day or two before you attempt lining the inner regions.
  • Don't apply in a rush. If you're anxious or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you run the risk of inadvertently poking yourself, in which case, you would risk scratching your cornea (the transparent part of the eyeball which covers the iris and pupil).

Do your lashes look dried out and hard?

You wear way too much mascara. Geller calls this the ultimate preventable makeup blunder. "Too much mascara makes lashes look hard as a rock," she says. "Your eyes may be beautiful, but your lashes are dried out, look hard and flake under the eyes." To prevent the hard-lash look, always work with newer mascaras. If your mascara is older than three months, Laura Geller a well known makeup artist says, it's already drying out, so it will go on uneven, thick and gloppy. "The creamier the mascara, the better," Geller recommends. "If you put on two or three coats and you don't have enough, you're using the wrong mascara." Check out conditioning products that can give your lashes a fuller look without clumping.
