Winter Beauty Tips

Trends come & trends go & this season you don't want to be caught in public looking like last year (or worse, last ... decade). I've read all the magazines for you & come up with the best & worst trends for winter.

Winter Do #1: Goodbye Helmet Head The less done your hair looks, the more 'in' you'll look. You'll notice trendy hair this season looks loose, wavy & fresh. To mimic it, throw out the hairspray, use a light mousse instead of gel to add texture & don't be afraid to let your roots grow out, just a bit.

Winter Dont #1: Grow nails long & finish them with a French manicure Short, round nails are 't hot for this season. Skip the long-taloned manicure & instead, paint your nails dark.

Winter Do #2: Don't throw out the self-tanner yes, we love Nicole Kidman's porcelein skin too, but there's nothing sexier than a bronzed glow in the dead of winter.
You'll always look as if you just got back from the tropics.

Winter Don't #2: Layer on the foundation A fresh face -- admittedly hard to get in winter if you live in the cold climes -- is key this winter. But to look fresh, you must take it easy with the foundation. No one needs to slather on foundation all over her face. Stick to your bad zones, typically around your eyes, your nose & on your cheeks. You don't need foundation on your forehead or even neck.

Another tip: Skip foundation altogether & use concealer around your eyes & nose.

Winter Do #3: Go smoky on the eyes, pale on the lips To get perfect smoky eyes, use brown shades if you're blonde, dark brown if you are brunette & deep purple or black if you have black hair (the best black is 'la femme hollywood'). Start with eyeliner, moving on to a dark eyeshadow, lightening as you go up the lid. A bit of shimmer on the inside corner of the eye & on the browbone gives you a super 'awake' look. Try Benefit High Brow ($18 at benefitcosmetics.com). Oh & don't be afraid to pile on the mascara. Applying multiple coats really does thicken.

Winter Don't #3: Avoid red lips Red lips & pale skin are a classic look that endures. Dior's rich, red shades are favorites of stylists. Just be sure to lay off the self-tanner if you're going for red lips.

Winter Do #4: Layer your favorite fragrances Sarah Jessica Parker created her own unique scent by layering 3 fragrances -- one super cheap, a man's musk & a fabulous rich scent. The result isn't her new 'Lovely' but she swears she's still trying to mimic her favorite scent. Parker's right on to a hot trend of the moment: layering two fragrances to create a new scent. How to do it? Take your favorite scent & layer a new one atop it. Try out several versions until you find your favorite mix.

Winter Don't #4: Ignore your feet Yes your feet are all covered up during the winter, but it's such a treat to keep them groomed. Either treat yourself to pedicures or do them yourself. Also, keep a buffing stick in the shower & slough off that nasty dead skin. A great one is Feet First Buffing Pad ($4 at purebeauty.com) used in combination with a sugar rub. Try Pure Fiji Sugar Rub ($32 at purefiji.com).

Winter Do #5: Moisturize after every shower Skin left unmoisturized will itch, and itching (especially done when you're not paying complete attention) can cause scabs, which in turn can scar. In the shower, make sure you exfoliate your body thoroughly with a loofah. I like wearing those loofah gloves. Then when you get out & dry off, slather on the moisturizer. My favorite? Kiel's.

Winter Don't #5: Pooh-pooh fake eyelashes Trust us, Jessica Simpson has gorgeous eyes because she slaps on the falsies. There are all sorts of false eyelashes to try these days. Don't want to be too obvious? Try the individual lashes.

Extra tip: Don't let the winter scalies take over your lips this winter. Nothing is nastier than dead skin on your lips. So why do we get chapped lips in the cold season? Your lips are susceptible to drying because they contain no oil glands. Plus, when the cold comes, frequent lip-licking doesn't help. This winter steer clear of matte lipsticks which tend to be drying while also showing off scaly lips. Instead, try lip gloss. A great gloss (like MAC's lipglass) will prove more moisturizing. Don't want to mess with a gloss? A great hydrating lip balm is Blistex Lip Infusion. it contains lanolin which keeps the moisture in.

How to look younger...

Here are a few beauty tricks that will make you look younger with just a sweep of a blush brush or mascara wand.

1. Keep your hair just below the chin. Side-swept bangs & hair just below your chin will take off years.

2. Lipstick shade can age you Another trick to looking younger is to steer clear of brown lipstick shades.

3. Don't overpluck Once you hit your 30s, you'll want to be careful not to overpluck your eyebrows since brows are less apt to grow back if you excessively pluck.

4. Get your teeth lightened Over time, teeth may yellow from coffee, tea or red wine stains.
You can whiten teeth quickly with over-the-counter products such as Crest Whitestrips.

5. Stand up straight. Think about all the sexy women you know. They stand up straigtht & confidently. Not only will this make you look 10 pounds thinner in seconds, it will make you look 5 years younger as well.

Bonus tip! Get a good night's sleep Few things age you overnight more than a poor night's sleep. Your eyes are puffy, your skin sallow & dull & your face sags.

How To Store Makeup

Skip the fancy makeup bags & store makeup in freezer-size Ziploc bags, this way you can see exactly what you need & you can throw the bag out when they get dirty. The bags also protect your main bag during trips or flights, when screwtops inevitably come undone or plastic covers fall off your eyeshadow, getting makeup everywhere...inside the Ziploc.

How To How to Use a Curling Iron

While a curling iron can be one of your favorite ways to create your style, it is very easy to damage your hair. Here are instructions on how to safely use your curling iron and what to watch out for.

Here's How:
1. I would highly recommend that you practice using the curling iron while it is cold. Handling is going to be awkward until you get a "feel" for the tool.

2. Use a thermal product to protect your hair from burning. Revlon Lisse Smoothing Balm will offer protection from the intense heat of the iron, but there are lots of thermal protecting products on the market.

3. Comb hair carefully so that there are no tangles. Hair should be as smooth as possible for the best results.
4
. For short hair, you are obviously going to try to get as close to the scalp as possible. Be very careful that you don't touch the scalp with the iron. Lots of stylists position a comb between the scalp and the iron just to be safe.

5. For longer hair, using a curling iron is far easier. Practice however, is still important.

6. It is really important to curl small amounts of hair at a time. One of the biggest mistakes is trying to wrap too much hair around the barrel of the curling iron. This will result in the need to re-curl the section several times to get the amount of curl you want. This can lead to a lot of damage. With small amounts of hair, it should take about 5 seconds to curl the section.

7. Remove the curling iron from the curl and allow to cool without touching. This will allow the curl to set. Move on to the next section of hair.

8. Be aware of the ends of the hair. They need to be firmly held in place before closing the iron. What is referred to as fish hooks are the result if the ends are not secured.
9. When the curls have cooled, loosen with your fingers and spray with your favorite styling spray.

Tips:
Look for a curling iron with multiple settings. This will allow you to choose the heat level.
Using for too long or too often can dry out and sometimes burn your hair. Pay special attention to your useage and potential split ends. Trimming your hair on a regular basis will ensure that the damage does not travel up the hair shaft.

Curling irons come in a range of sizes. The narrower the barrel, the tighter the curl.

Beauty Secrets

Are there any little-known hair tips that our readers should know for bad hair days?

Absolutely! My favorite trick for medium-to-long hair is the messy bun. Not only do buns look sophisticated and hip, they hide bad ends and awkwark cowlicks. Plus, the messier, the sexier! I also love the bandana look, which is totally in right now. As long as you have makeup on, you won't look as if you're meant to be working on a farm. Plus, the bandana look is cute on hair of all lengths.

What is the one skin care or makeup product that every woman should have in her purse?

Lipstick or gloss. Provided a woman has great skin, all she really needs is mascara (which you only have to apply once in the morning, so no need to carry it your purse) and lipstick or gloss to look put together.

What is the best way to deal with the occasional blemish?

Camouflage it with concealer. But make sure to dot the concealer on with the pad of your middle finger. You never want to rub concealer in like you would sunscreen or foundation.

What is the most surprising beauty secret you have discovered over the years?

There are two. The first is that the less makeup a woman wears, the younger she looks. The second is how a good skincare routine can take years off your face. By skincare, I mean wearing sunscreen daily then using antioxidants, peels and scrubs to buy back lost time and fix damaged skin. I thought all those skincare products were a bunch of mumbo jumbo until I tried them. Now my routine is 50 percent skincare, 50% makeup application

Pedicures: For the Entire Family?

There are new salons cropping up across the US that cater to men. Just last night as I was getting a pedicure a dad walked in with his two daughters (approximately age 14 and 12). All three proceeded to sit down around me to get pedicures. Very cute. And this dad wasn't some uber-metrosexual. He looked like extremely average (I refused to look at his feet) and his daughters seemed blissfully carefree (at their age, I would have been mortified to get a pedicure with my father). - Julyne Derrick

I convinced my boyfriend to go with me the last time I got a pedicure, but I had to promise him we would go at a time that it wasnt busy. So, we went and he loved it and isnt ashamed to admit it!

What do you think? Should men get pedicures?
