What is Cellulite and How Do You Get Rid Of It?

Despite what many infomercials or magazine advertisements tell you, changing the appearance of cellulite isn't as easy as they claim. There is one guarantee I can make about these "miracle" creams, pills, surgeries, and therapies-although they may develop some quick results, they will continuously cause you to invest your finances, as well as your own precious time into sessions and/or costly bottles of the claimed sensational product in order to maintain the results. Are you seeing the strategic trend?

If you're like me, you've fallen for a few of these ads and infomercials and have been left disheartened, still seeking, and feeling even more hopeless than before. Does this sound familiar? It's enough to make you want to give up and believe there is no way out.

First, you should know that at one point or another, we've all fallen prey to these commercial ploys. It's not your fault. We've been lied to and come to a point oftrying these proclaimed quick cures in a sometimes last-ditch effort to remove ourselves from our current situation.

I'm here to take you away from this unrealistic view of cellulite reduction and body transformation and bring you into a realistic view of how to (and this is the key) healthily change your appearance and confidence levels through a process of goal-setting and lifestyle change. It's not something that will take you away from your every day routine (like the surgeries, pills, creams, and therapies); it's something that will become a part of your every day routine-I'd venture to say, even a welcome part of your every day routine.

The Hard Truth About Cellulite

Here are the facts. Most all women (unless severely malnourished) have some degree of cellulite. Cellulite is nature's way of ensuring that the female body has enough calories available for pregnancy and all the processes involved. Does this mean it is a battle that isn't really worth fighting? No.

Although creams and massage therapy can all help to decrease the appearance of cellulite, they should only be used to supplement the no-regrets, guaranteed way to boost your confidence by zapping cellulite dimples.

Healthcare professionals can not stress this enough. Dermatologist, Mitchel Goldman, MD, associate clinical professor, Division of Dermatology, University of California at San Diego says, "[While creams and massage therapy can help], if someone loses a lot of weight and exercises regularly to tone up, this person [will] find a dramatic improvement in cellulite."

Tips from the "Desperate Housewives"

Do you love the show "Desperate Housewives"? Learn their beauty secrets...
Julyne Derrick

Eva Longoria’s beauty secrets.
Longoria, the only star on the show under 40 (she’s 29) tells Us Weekly, “I don’t overdo the hair and makeup.” Like Hatcher, she knows the secret to looking young is to not pile on the makeup. Instead, Longoria adds color to her dark looks by adding a bit of gold shimmer cream from Girlactik to her cheeks & forehead. The actress also loves the line’s Star Shadows in Timeless and Satin ($12 at Sephora.com).

How to look 20 when you’re 30. Do highlight your best features. Longoria, for example, shows off her legs, not her cleavage. If it’s your eyes, play them up. If you have full lips, show them off with a gloss or dare to go red. Don’t use a thick concealer, it will settle into fine lines highlighting your flaws. For a dewy glow, try Longoria’s favorite foundation, Laura Mercier Foundation ($38 at lauramercier.com).

Marcia Cross’s beauty secrets.
More than the other stars on the show, Cross is known for her porcelain complexion. How does she keep her skin so gorgeous at 43? Us Weekly reports Cross uses the ultra-luxe & super-hydrating Crème de la Mer ($110 at gloss.com) to keep her skin soft. She then applies a creamy foundation and tops it all off with a pressed powder. For lips, she uses glosses by Dessert Beauty (try Desserts Deliciously Kissable Plumping Lip Gloss in Dreamy, $21 at sephora.com).

Want Cross’s hair on ‘Housewives’? Newsweek reports that when Cross showed for the photos for the magazine’s article in late 2004, she balked when asked to pose as Bree Van Der Kamp. It seems Cross didn’t want to pose in her character’s trademark ‘do, the flip that has helped make her famous. But if you want the look it’s easy to do, simply blow dry your hair straight but flip the bottom up with a round, steel brush. The aluminum barrel on these brushes rely on the heat and act as a curling iron for your hair.

Nicollette Sheridan’s beauty secrets.
Us Weekly reports Sheridan treats her face to monthly customized Super Performance Facial Treatments ($200 a pop) at L.A.’s Jim Wayne salon. These facials help treat her skin (which is dry & sensitive according to her facialist, Octavia Ellington). As for her hair, Jim Wayne cuts her trademark blonde locks in long layers for a ‘young, sexy, hot look,’ he tells Us. The makeup artists on ‘Housewives’ use pink tones on the actress, who is reportedly a ‘gloss maven’ and prefers Jessica Simpson’s Dessert beauty line.

Has Sheridan or hasn’t Sheridan? Whether or not Sheridan has gone under the knife has been under debate for years. Her post-Knots Landing face drew notice from gossip columnist Liz Smith, who dubbed it ‘startlingly exotic’ & ‘a little transgendered-esque.’ Sheridan immediately fought back with a statement that called Smith’s allegations, ‘malicious and patently false rumors…. sprung whole cloth from ... feverish, overactive and inaccurate imaginations.’ She even had plastic surgeon Frank Ryan examine her face without finding a single scar.

Teri Hatcher’s beauty secrets.
US Weekly reports the secrets to Teri’s look is the old adage, ‘less is more.’ Since Teri is 40, less makeup makes her look fresher. Her makeup artist & hairstylist, Don Malot, adds a luminescent liquid to her foundation to make her skin ‘dewy and glowy.’ He also uses a brown shadow with shimmer to make Hatcher’s brown eyes stand out.

How to get her hair. Hatcher has naturally wavy hair and wore soft curls on the red carpet the night she won the Golden Globe, she prefers it straight.. Since even wavy hair can look flat (and flat, straight hair is not ‘in’ at the moment), Malot gives it extra body by applying Redken Spray Starch to damp strands before blow-drying Hatcher’s hair straight.

Teeth Whitening

Is it ok to whiten your teeth?
Julyne Derrick

Teeth whitening is one of those quick beauty fixes that can totally change your look while knocking out your pocketbook. Many dentists have jumped on the trend & offer teeth whitening in their offices, or you can splurge at a whitening spa such as BriteSmile (which will offer you a 2 for 1 deal if you bring a friend). But while nothing will work as fast as a professional laser whitening procedure, the over-the-counter remedies will give you great results, according to New York dentist Dr. Jennifer Salzer in the September 2005 issue of Lucky Magazine.

Here are some options to try:

1. The strips. Crest Whitestrips Premium Plus have improved over the past year and now are much longer to cover your teeth. Salzer says their secret ingredient is 10 percent hydrogen peroxide, which is pretty powerful.

2. Go Smile System. This bleaching tray system is a bit pricier than the strips but they work great and are easier on sensitive teeth.

3. Whitening toothpaste. The toothpaste is actually better for maintaining your white smile after you've lightened. So use #1 or #2 and then invest in some toothpaste. Just remember to drink your tooth-staining coffee & dark sodas from a straw.

Do Lip Plumpers Work?

Yes, we were skeptical at first as well. And while the new lipsticks that promise to 'plump your lips' really do work, the effect is temporary. Here's how it works: Some formulas use a traditional lip-plumping ingredient, such as MaxiLip, which stimulates collagen & boost hydration. Others use ingredients that help lips retain moisture, which gives lips the appearance of being fuller.

10 Shaving Tips For Spring

How to avoid nicks, ingrown hairs & irritation

Shaving first became popular during World War II when nylon stockings were in short supply & bare legs became a trend that has yet to cease. Today, more & more women are turning to waxing, however, shaving remains the least expensive form of hair removal. Here are 10 tips & tricks to ensure you're doing it the right way & cutting down on the nicks & irritation so common to shaved skin.

1. The trick to shaving is to wet your skin & let it soften from the heat & moisture. You don't want to shave dry skin. Shaving is a natural exfoliator & you'll clog up the razor with dead skin while putting yourself at risk for nicks.

2. There's no need to waste your money on shaving creams formulated especially for women. They are virtually the same as the creams sold for men. (Now if you can just find a scent you can live with).

3. You are going to have to experiment with razors until you find the perfect one for you. Ask your friends for recommendations & look for a razor with lubricated strips, pivoting heads & spring-mouonted multiple blades. I've sampled several types & varieties & was amazed at how different each feels. My favorite? The Gillette Venus razor. Another great & new bet: Schick Quattro for Women, which has 4 super-thin blades & a pivoting head.

4. Be sure to change razors or cartridges on a regular basis, a dull blade can lead to nicks. Also, whatever you do, don't borrow your guy's razor. His hair is coarser & will dull a blade. (Plus, don't men typically hate it when women borrow razors?)

5. Be sure to exfoliate your skin before shaving. It gets rid of all the dead skin cells that could clog up your razor, preventing a close shave.

6. Since your leg hairs grow down, you'll want to start at your ankles & shave up. For your underarms, you'll need to shave in every direction since the hair there grows every which way.

7. When finished, apply oil or moisturizer. The skin on your legs have few oil glands & has a tendency for dryness.

8. Ingrown hairs are caused when the hairs curl back under the skin. Avoid ingrowns by exfoliating daily & using a glycolic acid body lotion.

9. If you have a chronic case of ingrown hairs, try Tend Skin , an over-the-counter lotion for ingrown hairs, applying it in the morning and at night. The bumps should disappear within a couple days.

10. Consider opting for waxing, at least on your legs. You'll find that if you have coarser hair, it won't grow back as fast.

5 Things A Grown Woman Should Never Wear

Here is an interesting article I found written by Cynthia Nellis..

5 Things A Grown Woman Should Never Wear

You may already know about the biggie fashion sins like wearing suntan-colored pantyhose. But did you know that little girl fashions like pigtails and overalls look ridiculous on grown women? Of course, with every rule there are exceptions: Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw on "Sex and the City" comes to mind as someone who breaks most of the following rules. But for most of us, there are a few guidelines to what looks good.

1) Overalls
Overalls belong on a farm. Period. They don't flatter anyone, and there are much better ways to look down-home sexy (a checked shirt tied at the midriff is a better start).

2) Pigtails
Plastic surgery, not pigtails, is the only way to go if you successfully want to shave 20 years off your face: pigtails on anyone well out of their teens just looks like a pathetic attempt at girlishness. A single ponytail, on the other hand, is considered almost universally flattering on women of all ages.

3) Knee socks
Oh, you can wear knee socks: just as long as you keep them out of sight under pants. Knee socks with miniskirts are adorable on teen girls and children, sad on real women. Instead, opt for sheer hosiery, opaque tights or fabulous (faux) tanned bare legs.

4) Tie Dye
Unless your child gives you a handmade tie-dye shirt, let the skaters and noveau hippies give this look a try. On the other hand, patchwork pieces -- bags, skirts, hats -- seem to always look adorably bohemian and crafty for anyone.

5) Rabbit Fur
If you must wear fur, please at least stick with a mammal that's not likely to wind up as the family pet. And nothing's more ridiculous than brightly colored rabbit fur. A better bet is something wonderful and faux.
