Q. Does drinking 8 glasses of water a day keep my skin moist?

A.

No. Despite years of having this drummed into our heads, this is not true. It is good to keep your body, including your skin, hydrated, however the outermost layer of skin does not absorb water since it is made up of dead skin cells. Moisture level of skin is not determined by internal factors, but rather external ones, such as cold or hot air, dry head and by the number of oil-producing glands you have.

Dark Shadows Under Eyes

Concealer Tip
To cover dark shadows under the eyes, use an undereye concealer that is one shade lighter than your foundation. It should not be so light however that you appear to have white circles under your eyes. Apply it very gently with a brush until the darkness disappears. Make sure that the concealer is not overly oily or it will settle into any fine lines in the area.

How to use an eyelash curler.

Curling eyelashes make your eyes look wider & brighter. Metal eyelash curlers are better than plastic. You'll want to replace the pads on the curler every 2 months. For best results, you'll want to gentrly heat the curler with a blowdryer for no more than 5 seconds.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 3 minutes

Here's How:

1. Eyelash curlers work best on clean eyelashes. Make sure eyelashes are free of mascara. If necessary, use eye makeup remover to remove old mascara.

2. With your blowdryer on low heat, blow air on the curler for no more than 5 seconds. Touch the metal. If it's hot, let it cool for a few seconds. You don't want to burn your eyelid.

3. Open the curler, clamp lashes near the roots. Hold for 10-30 seconds. Never curl lashes after you apply mascara -- as the mascara dries, lashes can stick to the curler & be torn from the roots. Don't bother curling bottom lashes.

4. Repeat on the other eye.

Spring's Hottest Beauty Trends.

What's hot for spring?

Here's a recap of the trends I've noticed in this week's latest crop of magazines to come through my mailbox...

Waves are still hot 'Everyone is still obsessed with waves & texture this spring,' reports celeb hairstylist Kevin Mancusu in this week's Us Weekly. To get this gorgeous waves, he suggests working in a light styling gel (I opt for Bumble & Bumble products) & blowing it dry with a diffuser.

3 pretty perfumes The staff at O tried & tested the following 3 perfumes & found them utterly delightful. Next time you're at your local department stores give these a whiff: Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile (it's $118 but smells like grass after it rains); Parfums DelRae Debut (very citrus-y & not too pricey at $80); Liz Claiborne Spark Seduction for Women (smells like summer nights in the South & it's affordable at $52).

A great makeup look for spring For a modern rosy look, "Use pink and rose on the eyes, lips, and cheeks," says makeup artist Dick Page in this month's Allure. Then, give them a boost with some white cheek shimmer &gunmetal gray eyeliner.

15 Lipstick Tricks & Tips

e.waverly

Everything You Need to Know About Lipsticks Rona Berg, in her book, "The Beauty Basics," lists a bunch of great lipstick tips & tricks I want to share with you. I've added a few of my own too. Follow these lipstick tips & tricks and you'll save money, you'll look prettier & you're lipstick will last longer.

Tip #1: Store lipstick in the fridge. It will last weeks longer.

Tip #2: Never use a tester on your lips. It's just plain unhygienic. Instead, test lipstick on your fingertips. It's a closer fit to your lips than the back of your hand.

Tip #3: Use liner on your lips as a base. Want lipstick to last longer, than fill in your lips with the liner first. If you're using light lipstick, try a nude liner. Then slick your lipstick on top.

Tip #4: Don't skip the liner.
prerequisite liner, your lips will look "smudgier" according to Berg, softer & less defined.

Tip #5: Keep lipstick off your teeth with this trick. This is a trick I learned years ago from my mom. After applying lipstick, take your index finger & pop it in your mouth, then pull it out. The excess lipstick will come off on your finger rather than your teeth.

Tip #6: Lipstick can act as a blush. But never use blush as a lipstick.

Tip #7: Apply liner first. Lipstick tends to feather if you apply liner second. Also, you won't be able to see the natural line of your lips if you apply lipstick first.

Tip #8: The older you are, the 'creamier' your lips should look. Women over 50 should avoid matte or a gloss and stick with a creamy lipstick.

Tip #9: Don't throw out a bad color lipstick. Instead, use other colors to perfect your own shade. You can also color in lips with a darker liner before applying a lipstick that's too bright.

Tip #10: For 'plump' lips, apply liner just outside your natural lipline. 'Nuff said.

Tip #11: Keep lip gloss on longer with liner. Lip gloss is infamous for wearing off fast, but if you fill in lips first with the liner, the gloss has something to stick to.

Tip #12: Heal -- don't throw out -- a broken lipstick. If your lipstick breaks off, simply take off the broken portion with a tissue, then slowly wave a lit match under the broken piece of lipstick. When it's melted a bit, put it back on the base, swivel it down and put it in the fridge -- uncovered -- for 5 minutes.

Tip #13: Avoid orange or brown shades. They tend to make teeth appear yellow.

Tip #14: Save the last bits. Down to the last bit of you favorite lipstick? There's plenty more at the bottom of your tube. Scrape out the last bits with a cotton swap or orange stick & mix it with Vaseline or lip gloss in a lipstick pallette.

Tip #15: Keep lipstick off glass. Discreetly lick the lip of the glass before touching your lips to it. It works!

What You Should Know About Cosmetic Sponges

What You Should Know About Cosmetic Sponges

I would be lost without my makeup sponges. I use them about as frequently as I use my brushes. This week, I have collected a bit of information that will tell you how to use them and when to toss them.

Here's How:
1. To make them last a little longer, you might want to wash them regularly in regular soap. It is not necessary to use an anti- bacterial soap. Actually, it's not advised. Bacteria is quickly learning to ignore our efforts.
2. If you want to extend their life, allow them to air dry. This means finding a spot on the counter that is not going to be splashed by a running tap.
3. Different sponges are designed for different reasons. Using the right sponge will lengthen the life of your sponges.
4. Cellulose sponges can also be used to apply powder to the face, especially under the eyes where a brush can't do an adequate job.
5. Watch for sponges that have lost their original shape, smells odd, or is starting to shred at the edges. Another reason to replace.
6. Circular or velour powder sponges need to be replaced whenever they become caked or shiny. Most will not stand up to washing. I have tried!
7. It is advised that sponges should be replaced after just a few uses and for safety sake, I would follow this guideline. At present, they are very inexpensive.

Tips:
Latex sponges can cause an adverse reaction in some women.
I have to say that I like the texture of sea sponges for applying foundation over the larger sections of the face. Although they are a bit more expensive, I love the silkiness.
The little triangular sponges are great for working foundation around the nose but as soon as the point starts to wear down, use a new one.

So far I have given you the good information, now it's time for the bad. Makeup sponges absorb really well. That means that some of your foundation will end up in the sponge and not on your face.

Adequate use of ordinary hand soap could destroy the bacterium that is growing in your makeup sponge, but it is easier and safer to simply replace it frequently.

How Chanel #5 Got Its Name

Sorry for the delay in posting - I was in Australia for 10 days! It is beautiful there :-)

How Chanel #5 Got Its Name

E.Waverly

A Russian perfumer named Earnest Beaux formulated this famed perfume in 1921 for Gabrielle Chanel. There are lots of stories about the origin of this scent but my favorite goes like this. Beaux came up came up with five different scents and since Chanel was in the midst of a horrible headache, she instructed him to leave the bottles on the mantel.

Minutes after he left, she sprang from the sofa and began sniffing the contents of the bottles. It seems that the fifth bottle caught her attention and bottle number five was chosen. Five was also her lucky number. True or not? No one really knows except Chanel herself. Today it remains one of the world's largest selling perfume.
