Tips for Picking the Proper Foundation

Tips:

  • Try the color out on your jawline, not your wrist or hand
  • Remember to stand in a doorway or outside to see if the color matches
  • Don't go for foundations boasting fancy antioxidants or sunscreen. You'll need to always wear sunscreen under your foundation.
  • Believe it or not, today foundation is totally optional. It's healthier for your skin NOT to wear foundation daily. If you have blemishes or pimples, try strategically placed concealer instead.
  • Go for different looks for evening and day. A light foundation is perfect for work or weekend. While a sexy shimmer is great for evening.

Foundation for Asian Skin?

Asian skin can be tricky. You want to stay away from pinkish shades & stick to a yellow base. Your best bet is to go to a large department store that stocks dozens of brands & shades (like Sephora) & test out different colors with the help of a salesperson.

The trick to testing foundation is to stand near a window to view the shade in natural light. Otherwise, you might try custom blending. Several department stores offer this. The makeup artist will blend the perfect formula for you (keep in mind you may need a different shade for summer & one for winter).

Some great brands to try: Prescriptives makes 500 shades so chances are you'll find your perfect fit. Also Shu Uemura & Shisheido are two Asian-based companies that cater to Asian skin

What is Foundation Primer?

Just like you prime a wall before you paint it, you can prime your face before you apply foundation. Primers are a relatively new concept in the makeup industry and you'll notice they're popping up everywhere.

They actually work much like a moisturizer under your foundation does: they ease the application of foundation and are meant to create a barrier between foundation and skin. But primers are touted to add even more than moisturizers can: They'll even out skin tone, help your makeup stay on longer and absorb oil with salicylic acid.

Other benefits, according to Laura Mercier:
1. They allow foundation to "stay put" in hot weather.
2. Help prevent skin from absorbing talc and pigment from your foundation as well as preventing talc from drawing oil from the skin.

They contain botanicals such as lavender, orange, jasmine, rose, geranium, grape, kiwi and aloe extracts to soothe and refresh the skin.
