4 lip gloss tricks

1. Apply properly. Instead of putting gloss on like you do lipstick (from left to right, top to bottom with a smack!) apply gloss to the middle of your bottom lip only. Rub lips together. This will keep gloss from going on too thickly & getting goopy on you.

2. Apply gloss over lipstick. I love the look of just a bit of gloss over a neutral lipstick. Again, dab just a bit in the center of lips and smooth out from there. Keeps you from applying too thickly.

3. Got too goopy? Smack lips between a tissue paper, just like you would lipstick.

4. Make gloss pop. Lighten lips with concealer before adding colored lip gloss

How Can I look Older?

I found this post on another website and thought I would share...I have this same problem. People always think i am MUCH younger than I really am, but I was told I would like that compliment when I am about 50 years old :-)

Hi, I have a few problems and I hope you can help! I'm 19, turning 20 in February. I am a dance teacher but I am often thought of as a 12-year-old assistant! I always wear my hair in a ponytail and don't wear makeup. Is there a certain way to do my hair or makeup so I look older? Everytime I pay with my credit card the cashier says "so how old are you?" or "is this your card?" and when I tell them I'm 19 they're shocked! Help me look my age!!! Thanks! Jennifer

A. If you want to look older there are several things you can do:

1. Stop wearing your hair in a ponytail & invest in a trendy, yet sophisticated, hairstyle. Look for pictures in magazines & tell your stylist you want to look older. You might go for a shorter hairstyle, which tends to age people.

2. Wear makeup. Play up your eyes or your lips, but never both at the same time. Make sure you always wear mascara at the very least & a swipe of gloss. If you want to go dramatic, try a deep red lipstick, but don't make up your eyes too much. A swipe of mascara will do you. And try putting it on your top lashes only. Makeup will help 'age' you.

3. Dress like a 22-year-old college graduate. OK, you're a few years away from being 22, but still when you're not going to dance classes & you're going out with friends or shopping, dress like someone with a desk job would.

4. Invest in Lucky Magazine. Lucky is a great magazine for stylish young people (& people in general). If you want to know what the hottest trends are, invest in this magazine, start studying the trends & adopt them.

Eyebrow Tips

Tips:

1. To ensure your tweezers maintain their firm grip, regularly wipe the tips with alcohol to remove any oily build up. Also, keep in mind that Tweezerman will sharpen your tweezers for free when they dull. (I always lose mine before they become dull).

2. If your brows are sparse or spotty, you can fill them in by pressing a brown shadow into your brow. Chanel's Perfect Brow Compact is the ultimate brow shadow. It's expensive, but worth the price. Plucked too much? Ji Baek, owner of Rescue Beauty Lounge in Manhattan suggests in Elle Magazine that you stimulate hair growth by massaging brows with a toothbrush.

3. If you use a pencil to fill in sparse brows, apply with short, feathered strokes from the inside of the brow out. Then carefully rub brows with a brush or your fingertips to soften the effect.

4. Brow gel helps keep your brows in place all day. Or if you don't have gel, apply a dab of hairspray to your finger and use it to keep unruly hairs in place.

5. I've saved the best tip for last. The ideal time for brow-shaping is the week after your period begins.

What You Need:
A great pair of tweezers. My recommended choice: Tweezerman
A mirror, preferably magnifying
Anbesol or children's teething gel if you're afraid of pain

What is a Foundation Primer? And Do I Need it?

A. Just like you prime a wall before you paint it, you can prime your face before you apply foundation. Primers are a relatively new concept in the makeup industry (they became popular in the last couple years) and you'll notice they've popped up everywhere. They actually work much like a moisturizer under your foundation does: they ease the application of foundation and are meant to create a barrier between foundation and skin.

Makeup artists swear primers go one step further than moisturizers: They'll even out skin tone, help your makeup stay on longer and absorb oil with salicylic acid. Other benefits, according to Laura Mercier:

1. They allow foundation to "stay put" in hot weather.

2. Help prevent skin from absorbing talc and pigment from your foundation as well as preventing talc from drawing oil from the skin.

3. They contain botanicals such as lavender, orange, jasmine, rose, geranium, grape, kiwi and aloe extracts to soothe and refresh the skin.

If you don't want the added step of a primer to your beauty routine, you can slather on moisturizer before makeup application, says Linda Wells, Allure's beauty editor.

How to Fight Eczema

How to Fight Eczema

Our friend D-D has suffered from eczema for years. She's sought out remedies from 'a million different places': Dermatologists, aestheticians, naturopaths, massage therapists. 'I have done it all,' she says.

Here's a culmination of her best tips:

1. Eczema is triggered by cold, dry weather, stress and a bad lifestyle. But like cancer, it does go into remission.
2. Always wear gloves when you do dishes.
3. Always moisturize after you wash your hands.
4. When the exzema is really bad, moisturize when you go to bed and sleep with cotton gloves. When you shower, try Eucerin instead of soap.
5. Try to shower less, the less your hands get wet the better.
6. Cut down on stress any way you can: Try yoga, meditation exercises.
7. Avoid touching things: You're more susceptible to infections when you have a breakout.
8. Consult a nutritionist. Wheat and dairy can aggravate your eczema.

New Years Beauty Resolutions

5 Things We Know (& You Do Too, Deep Down) About Being Beautiful This Year

In honor of the new year, we'd like to remind you ...

1. Aging gracefully trumps aging fearfully any day in our book. No one loves, loves, loves fine lines, wrinkles & cellulite, but the most lovely women in the world are the ones who don't bother with them and who don't obsess over them. So this year, resolve to put away those fears & focus on the positive aspects of aging. Like how much wealthier, funnier one gets as they get older.

2. Beauty really does (& we mean really) come from within. We love a woman who exudes happiness & contentedness. So this year resolve to flush out the bad things in your life: the negative friends, the annoying groups & clubs you loathe attending, some of the demands your husband & kids place on you.

Take some time for yourself, get yourself content & watch as your skin changes. Yep, it's not all about moisturizer, dear.

3. It's all about how YOU feel. There is no better way than to revive your inner sex goddess than to get a makeover (oh wait, maybe full on body treatments are even better? hmmmm, see #4 next). If you or a friend are entering the new year feeling not so sexy, treat yourself (or them) to a haircut & color & afterwards get yourself to a makeup counter & request a makeover. Only buy what you love, love, love. Step over to another makeup counter, have the technician wipe it all off and start over. Again, only buy what you love, love, love. Keep doing this until you are either sick of makeovers or you have purchased as much makeup as one person should own in a lifetime.

4. Spa treatments are a luxury worth the splurge. Yes, you just dropped a few grand on Christmas presents. But you are also very exhausted from visiting with people and cooking up a storm over the past couple weeks, aren't you. So then woman, get thee to the spa. Tell your husband you deserve it for all the gifts you have to wrap and all the meals you've had to prepare. And if he balks, threaten to bring him along. He just may love it. We firmly believe no woman should ever feel guilty over a seaweed wrap & deep tissue massage.

5. Treat someone you love to a facial, a massage or a foot rub. We all know from Psych 101 that nothing makes you feel better than giving back to someone. So put this in your pocket of tricks for the year: Offer your mate a backrub out of the blue. Give your daughter a foot rub when she's watching TV. Over at your best friend's house and she's stressed? Offer her a nice massage.

Have a happy, happy New Year Gorgeous....
Julyne Derrick

My Favorite Ad, From Dove

Huge kudos to the folks at Dove, who've created perhaps the best commercial of 2006. The film, features a rather plain-looking model who is first transformed by a bevy of makeup artists and hair stylists and then touched up by computer -- neck elongated, eyes enlargened, lips puffed up. The end result is her magnificent mug rising above pedestrians on a giant billboard. Dove has created a program to boost teens' self-esteem, the Dove Self-Esteem Fund. Watch the film, share it with those you love.
